‘Uthmān ash-Shahhām reported: I and Farqad as-Sabakhi went to Muslim ibn Abi Bakrah while he was in his land. We entered upon him and said: Did you hear your father narrating any Hadīth about the trials? He said: Yes, I heard Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating, saying: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, there will be trials. There will come a trial in which the one sitting in it will be better than the one walking towards it, and the one walking towards it will be better than the one rushing to it. If it happens or occurs, whoever has camels, let him catch up with his camels, whoever has sheep, let him catch up with his sheep, and whoever has land, let him go to his land." He said: A man said: O Messenger of Allah, what about the one who has neither camels, nor sheep, nor land? He said: "Let him take his sword and strike its edge with a stone, and then escape if he could escape. O Allah, have I conveyed? O Allah, have I conveyed? O Allah, have I conveyed?" He said: A man said: O Messenger of Allah, what if I am compelled and taken to one of the two sides, or one of the two groups, and a man strikes me with his sword, or an arrow comes and kills me? He said: "He will bear his sin and your sin, and he will be among the dwellers of Hellfire."
Narrated by Muslim‘Uthmān ash-Shahhām and Farqad as-Sabakhi asked Muslim, the son of the noble Companion Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him): Had he heard a Hadīth from his father about the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) regarding trials and fighting among Muslims? He replied: Yes. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that there will be trials after his death. In these trials, the one who sits and remains uninvolved is better than the one who walks towards them without waiting for them or searching for them, and the one who walks is better than the one who hastens towards them, searching for them and participating in them. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) then advised anyone living in a time or place where a trial happens or occurs, that if he can find a refuge to withdraw to, he should do so. Whoever has camels grazing should retreat to his camels, whoever has sheep grazing should retreat to his sheep, and whoever has land or a farm should retreat to his land. A man said: O Messenger of Allah, what about the one who has no refuge, neither camels, nor sheep, nor land? He said: Let him take his weapon, break it, and render it useless. Then let him flee to save himself and his children, if he can escape. Then he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) testified three times, saying: O Allah, have I conveyed (the message)? O Allah, have I conveyed (the message)? O Allah, have I conveyed (the message)? A man said: O Messenger of Allah, what if I am forced to join one of the two sides or groups, and a man strikes me with his sword, or an arrow comes and kills me? He said: He will bear his sin and the sin of the one he killed and, on the Day of Judgment, he will be from the dwellers of Hellfire.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) wrote to Khosrow, Caesar, the Negus, and every other tyrant, calling them to Allah Almighty. And this Negus was not the same one over whom the Prophet (ﷺ) performed the funeral prayer.
Narrated by MuslimAnas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) informed that the Prophet (ﷺ), before his death, sent letters to the kings of the nations around him, inviting them to Islam. He wrote a letter to Khosrow (a title for every ruler of Persia), to Caesar (a title for every ruler of the Romans), and to the Negus (a title for the kings of Abyssinia). He also wrote to every tyrannical king who subjugated and oppressed people. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) clarified that the Negus to whom the letter was sent was not the same Negus who had embraced Islam, passed away, and for whom the Prophet (ﷺ) performed the absentee funeral prayer.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "O Allah, I am only human. Any Muslim man whom I insulted, cursed, or flogged, make it a means of purification and mercy for him."
Agreed uponThe Prophet (ﷺ) supplicated, saying: O Allah, I am only human. I become angry as humans do. So, any believer whom I have harmed, insulted, reviled, cursed, prayed to be expelled from Your mercy, or flogged and struck, make that a source of purification, a means of nearness to You, an expiation, and a mercy by which You show him mercy.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: It was said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate against the polytheists. He said: "I have not been sent as an invoker of curses; rather, I have been sent as a mercy."
Narrated by MuslimThe Prophet (ﷺ) was asked to supplicate against those who associated partners with Allah, but he said: I was not sent by Allah as one who curses—invoking exclusion and expulsion from His mercy and cutting people off from good. I was not sent for that; rather, I was sent to be a source of goodness and mercy for all people, especially for the believers.
‘Ā’ishah, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The first thing the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) started to experience from the revelation was the good vision in his sleep. He never saw a vision except that it came true like the break of dawn. Then seclusion was endeared to him, and he used to retreat to the Cave of Hirā’, where he would engage in Tahannuth-which is worship—for several nights before returning to his family and taking provisions for this. He would then go back to Khadījah to take provisions again for a similar number of nights until the truth came to him while he was in the Cave of Hirā’. The Angel came to him and said: Read! He said: "I do not know how to read." He said: "He took hold of me and pressed me forcefully until I could no longer bear it and then released me, saying: Read! I said: I do not know how to read. He took hold of me and pressed me forcefully for the second time until I could no longer bear it and then released me, saying: Read! I said: I do not know how to read. He took hold of me and pressed me forcefully for the third time and then released me, saying: {Read in the name of your Lord Who created, created man from a clinging clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous.}" [Surat al-‘Alaq: 1-3] The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned with these while his heart was trembling. He entered upon Khadījah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him until the shock of fear was gone from him. Then he informed Khadījah of what had happened and said to her: "Indeed, I feared for myself." Khadījah said: No, by Allah, Allah will never fail you. Verily, you maintain kinship ties, help those in need, support the destitute, provide the guests with food and shelter, and assist those affected by calamities. Khadījah took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal ibn Asad ibn ‘Abdul-‘Uzza, who had embraced Christianity in the pre-Islamic period and used to write the Scripture in Hebrew. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadījah said to him: O my cousin, listen to what your nephew has to say. Waraqah said to him: O my nephew, what have you seen? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed him of what he had seen. Waraqah said to him: This is the same Nāmūs (i.e., the angel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live until the time when your people would drive you out. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would they drive me out?" Waraqah said: Yes. No one has ever come with something like what you have brought without being treated with hostility. If I should live until that day, I would support you strongly. Soon after, Waraqah passed away, and the revelation paused.
Agreed upon‘Ā’ishah, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) informed that the first thing the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) started to experience of the revelation was the true vision in sleep. He never saw in his sleep a vision except that it came true and clear like daylight. Then seclusion was endeared to him, and he used to retreat in the Cave of Hirā’, where he would engage in worship for several nights before returning to his family and taking provisions for it. He would then go back to Khadījah, Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), to take provisions again for a similar number of nights until the truth came to him while he was in the Cave of Hirā’. Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to him and said: Read! He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: I do not know how to read. He said: So, he took hold of me, embraced me, and squeezed me until I could no longer bear it and then released me, saying: Read! Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous.}" [Surat al-‘Alaq: 1-3] He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned with these verses while his heart was trembling out of fear of death. He entered upon Khadījah bint Khuwaylid, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Wrap me in clothes, wrap me in clothes. They wrapped him in clothes until his fear went away. Then he informed Khadījah of what had happened and said to her: Indeed, I feared death for myself. Khadījah said: No, by Allah, Allah will never fail you. You maintain kinship ties, help the weak who cannot manage on their own, and provide for the poor and destitute by giving them what they cannot find elsewhere. You honor the guest and assist in times of hardship. Khadījah took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal ibn Asad ibn ‘Abdul-‘Uzza, a man who had renounced Jāhiliyyah (the pre-Islamic era of ignorance) and became Christian. He used to write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. Waraqah said to him: This is Jibrīl (Gabriel), whom Allah had sent to His Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). I wish I were young and could live until the time when your people would drive you out. He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Would they drive me out? He said: Yes. No man has ever come with something like what you have brought without being harmed and treated with hostility. If I should live until your day, I would support you strongly. Then shortly after, Waraqah passed away and the revelation was delayed for some time.
Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abdur-Rahmān reported that Jābir ibn ‘Abdullah al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: While narrating about the halt in revelation, he said in his Hadīth: "While I was walking, I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up, and there was the angel who had come to me at Hirā’, sitting on a chair between the heaven and the earth. I was terrified of him, so I returned and said: Cover me! Then Allah Almighty revealed: {O you covered [in your cloak], arise and warn} [Surat al-Muddaththir: 1-2] until His saying: {and shun idol worshiping.} [Surat al-Muddaththir: 5] After that, the revelation became intense and continuous."
Agreed uponThe Prophet (ﷺ), while recounting the halt in revelation at the beginning of his mission, said: As I was walking through the alleys of Makkah, I suddenly heard a voice from the sky. I looked up, and there was the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel)—the same one who had come to me in the cave of Hirā’—sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I was filled with fear and dread of him, so I returned to my family and said: Wrap me in a cloak. So Allah Almighty revealed: {O you covered} in your cloak, {arise} to call people to the message, {and warn} those who have not yet believed in your message. {And your Lord}—your only true God—{proclaim His greatness} and praise and exalt Him. {And your garments} and clothes {purify them} and clean them from impurities. {And shun the filth}, i.e., the worship of idols and false gods, {and keep away from it} completely. After that, the revelation became strong and continuous.
